Practice History

Our present surgery was built in the early 1960s by Dr John Davis who first practised nearer to Wigston.  He was well known locally as a caring family doctor.

The original building was just a single storey but a second floor was added as the practice expanded and other partners joined.  Dr Davis retired in 1986 and Dr Rackham who will be remembered by many of you became the Senior Partner.  Dr Young and Dr Davies joined her at that time and Dr Hadley joined as a partner in 1992.

The patient list grew over the years and in 1995 an extension to the premises was built and this now accommodates the reception area and waiting room.  It was shortly after this, in 1996 that Dr Kuncewicz joined the partnership.

Two retirements of longstanding partners – Dr Rackham in 1998 and Dr Young in 2006 – provided the opportunity for Drs Cook and Jameson to join the partnership as their respective replacements.  In more recent years Drs Chellamuthu, Hayward and Stokes have joined as salaried doctors.

The surgery began its emphasis on training in the mid 1990s.  Originally this involved the teaching of medical students from Leicester Medical School and over the last 10 years we have been joined by General practice Registrars, who are doctors completing the final three years of their training before being permitted to practice independently as GPs.

Over the years doctors at Central Surgery have also been recruited to positions in various institutions including Leicester University, De Montfort University, The Medical Defence Union, East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery, Leicester County and Rutland Primary Care Trust and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.  This has greatly added to the expertise within the practice.

Throughout all these changes the emphasis of all those working at Central Surgery continues to be to aspire to provide caring, considerate and comprehensive family medical services of the highest quality in the heart of the community of Oadby.
